Information regarding Lake Winnipesaukee and
It's History
| Winnipesaukee is a glacial
lake with an unusual history, since the last glaciations
actually reversed the flow of its waters. Lake Winnipesaukee
once flowed southeast, leaving via what is now Alton Bay
toward the Atlantic Ocean. When glacial debris blocked this
path, flow was redirected westward through Paugus Bay into
the Winnipesaukee River. The Winnipesaukee River flows west
from the lake and joins the Pemigewasset River to form the
Merrimack River. The Merrimack River rises in south central
New Hampshire and flows through Concord and Manchester into
Massachusetts and empties into the Atlantic Ocean. Lake
Winnipesaukee boasts 283 miles of shoreline covering 72
acres with a maximum depth of 187 feet. |

Lake Winnipesaukee has all kinds of summer and
winter activities. Here are a few, The Winnipesaukee Ice Fishing
Derby - boating/fishing - sailing - classic wooden boat show -
steam boat races. The summer starts with the annual Ice-Out
Contest a popular event in which people try to guess the date
that the Mount Washington, a large cruise ship that carries
tourists around the lake, can safely leave her port on Saunders
Bay and motor to four other ports. Since records began being
kept in 1851, ice-out has happened as early as March 29 and as
late as May 12, although 90 percent of the time it is declared
during early April.
In addition to boating you can visit the oldest summer resort in
the US, Wolfeboro. the artists communities around the lake, and
don’t forget the State Fairs in the fall, Lancaster, Deerfield
and Sandwich to name a few. Squam Lake where On Golden Pond was
filmed is just to the north and Newfound Lake is just to the
west.
