Squam lake was originally called Keeseenunknipee, which meant “the goose lake in the highlands”. The lake then took on the name Casumpa and then Asquam and finally Squam.

Squam Lake, NH's second largest lake, is located in the central part of the state, south of the White Mountains It borders on Grafton, Carroll, and Belknap Counties. Big Squam drains into Little Squam Lake, then into the Squam River eventually into the Pemigewasset River.

In 1938 the great hurricane swept through this region causing severe damage to the forest. Many of the fallen trees were brought to the sawmill for home building or furniture making, you may visit one of the many camps with this furniture, know locally as hurricane chairs.

Squam Lake is over 6000 acres with many islands, the Maximum Depth is 98 feet.

You will find a variety of fish including Salmon, rainbow trout, lake trout, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, pickerel, white perch. Don’t forget to be on the look out for Loons. While in the area don’t forget to visit the Squam Lake Natural Science Center. www.nhnature.org.
