Brief New Hampshire Lake Town Profiles

Waterfront Town profiles by lake:

Lake Winnipesaukee is just over 44,500 acres with 365 islands of which 274 have homes. Winnipesaukee is located in central NH in the Lakes Region. This region has wonderful restaurants, shopping, museums, music venues, theater, hiking, snowmobiling, ski resorts, art exhibits, crafts fairs and awesome attractions for all. Major airports are in Manchester and Boston.

Alton

Alton is located at the southern tip of the lake. In addition to being a major boating destination, winter offers snowmobiling and you can get to Gunstock Ski area in about 15 minutes.  Alton Bay is home to the only official ice landing strip in the country.  One of the largest islands, Rattlesnake,  is located just north of the town docks.  A very popular hike up Mount Major will afford you a beautiful view of Rattlesnake Island. The town is serviced by a major grocery store, and well-regarded hospitals are close by in Laconia and Wolfeboro. The Mount Washington makes a stop in Alton Bay.

Wolfeboro

Wolfeboro is the Oldest Summer Resort in the United States. Wolfeboro has a quaint downtown with shops, restaurants even a theater and museums. There are a couple of grocery stores in town, some eclectic specialty stores, a hospital and golf course. Brewster Academy, a popular Pre School, is located in town. The Mount Washington also stops in Wolfeboro at the town docks. In addition to all the boating activities on the lake you have bike trails, groomed cross country trails plus an active in-town ski hill with a rope tow for family outings. In addition to Lake Winnipesaukee, you have other desirable lakes in Wolfeboro such as Crescent Lake, Rust Pond,  and Lake Wentworth.

Tuftonboro

Tuftonboro is a rural town sitting between Wolfeboro and Moultonborough that includes a quaint hamlet known as Melvin Village. There is an artist community and a vibrant historical society in town. Two other popular lakes in town are Lower and Upper Beech Ponds. This is a very desirable low tax community.

Moultonborough

Moultonborough has miles of Winnipesaukee shoreline. There is a small town center with an old country store you must visit. Castle in the Clouds, a town landmark, has magnificent views of Lake Winnipesaukee, a great restaurant and numerous hiking trails for all abilities.  Grocery stores are nearby in Wolfeboro and Center Harbor. Traveling on Rt 25 you will pass one of the more desirable lakes in the region Kanasatka and just outside town is Wakonda Pond for those looking for a quiet lake experience. Moultonborough also has the honor of having one of the lowest town tax rates in NH

Center Harbor

Center Harbor is the winter berth for the Mount Washington Cruise Ship. It has several miles of shoreline on Squam Lake and shoreline on Lake Winnipesaukee where you can see the Mount Washington, town docks and beach. In the town village, you have a grocery store and several small shops, a beautifully renovated motel on the water and one of my favorite restaurant's Canoe.

Meredith

Sitting less than 1/2 mile apart in Meredith are Lake Waukewan and Lake Winnipesaukee.  This quaint town of just over 6000 enjoys exquisite restaurants and lodging right on the lake. Take a stroll thru town and along the waterfront enjoying the ever-changing sculpture walk. The town docks are in the center of town and it is a short walk from the docks to downtown shops. The annual fishing derby and pond hockey tournaments are legendary. There are also boat shows, a scenic railroad, snowmobiling, golf and major ski resorts.  The Mount Washington Cruise Ship also stops in Meredith to pick up passengers.

Laconia

Laconia is the largest town in the lakes region. It is home to Weirs Beach summer home of the Mt Washington Cruise Ship. Laconia biggest events include Bike Week and Pumpkin Festival. Thousands of motorcycles pack into the lakes region for this week-long event ending Fathers Day weekend and thousands of pumpkins in the fall. In Laconia you will have access to plenty of restaurants, shopping, marinas, golf courses and a regional hospital. Take the kids to Fun Spot one of the largest arcades in the world. Laconia is also home to Lake Winnisquam.

Gilford

Gilford is the home of Gunstock Ski Resort. Skiing, Zip Lines, Mountain Coaster and plenty of hiking trails, Bank of New Hampshire Pavilion an outdoor concert venue is in town, ( I have seen Meatloaf - Rod Stewart - Dillan), the sailing center on the lake plus an airport. Shopping, restaurants and the hospital are all a short drive from anywhere in town. Ellacoya State Park is in town and Gilford has one of the nicest town beaches in the area.
